France is a country which is known for many things – Disneyland Paris, the capital itself, the Eiffel Tower, the sophisticated Riviera in the south, camping in the various coastal resorts, wine, food, sophistication, and generally for being a fantastic country to visit. Really, if you’re looking for an excuse to head there, you’re not going to struggle, but many people head to France year upon year during the winter months for its fantastic ski resorts.
There are countless to choose from, and something for everyone in terms of ability. Of course, the après ski opportunities in most resorts are also fantastic, whilst also offering facilities for children to enjoy too. Everyone has heard of Val-d’Isere, the sophisticated and glamourous choice of the rich and famous, however checking out prices might actually surprise you, as there are some lower budget options available too!
Chamonix is another very popular choice, sat on Mount Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. The scenery around this region is something else entirely, and there are skiing and snowboarding opportunities for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers too. Alternatively, Tignes is another fantastic option, and a very popular one too.
You can spend a week skiing in La Plagne, another extremely popular and varied resort, before heading back over to the capital for a few days in the city – what better twin break is there than that? Megeve offers fantastic hiking trails for those who don’t want to don their skis, or perhaps those who want a break from the sport, with wonderful views on and over Mont d’Arbois. Chamrousse is another resort which is ideal for snowboarding enthusiasts too.
Put simply, skiing is now more popular than ever before, and that is because the price has fallen dramatically over recent years. It used to be that only the rather well off could enjoy a skiing break, because it was so expensive to do; thankfully this is a sport and experience which is available to more and more of us nowadays, and if you have never donned a pair of skis before in your life, there really is no better time than now to try! Ski schools are available at an overwhelming number of resorts, so you can learn slowly and carefully under the watchful eye of a professional, before starting your skiing experience for real yourself. Children are also very well catered for, with children’s ski schools available, and nursery slopes to begin on.
Throw in some fantastic après ski, amazing scenery, and a little delicious French food, and you really do have yourself a winter wonderland break like no other!
